Air Marshal Mukerjee - The man behind Subroto Cup
Subroto Cup football tournament, named after Air Marshal, Subroto Mukherjee, has acclaimed fame over the years yet few know about the "Father of the Indian Air Force" - Air Mars
Subroto Mukerjee, born on 5 March 1911 in a #Bengali family of repute, completed his studies in India and went for further studies to England. He joined the Royal Air Force and became the first Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
He had an illustrious career and had been awarded with many honours until his accidental death in year 1960 in Tokyo.
In 1958, two years before the misfortune, Mukerjee, the chief of the air staff, an eminent football lover and a regular member of #MohunBagan Athletic Club, had conceived the idea of an inter-school all-India football tournament. Hence, after the death of Mukherjee on 8 November 1960, as a tribute to the Air Marshall, the Tournament was implemented in his name posthumously. It was first held in 1960, with participation of about 50 school teams, a number which has increased tremendously as the tournament became the most coveted cup in Asia. Today nearly 34,000 school teams participate in Subroto Cup.
The tournament is today played in 3 categories - U14 Boys, U17 Girls and U17 Boys. The U17 Girls tournament was introduced to promote #WomenEmpowerment and ensure promotion of #Football amongst girls which has numerous benefits linked to it.
